Is 20 mph fast enough for an e-bike?

Oct 23, 24

Author: Anastasiia Chub

A speed of 20 miles per hour can be fast enough for many electric bikes, including ones that you may use for food delivery.

For most daily commuters, couriers, and delivery riders, 20 mph is more than a decent speed that they will ever need.

You can move around with relatively good time, but you aren't going so fast that control and safety become factors.

However, this may or may not suffice depending on your experience level and needs.

For comparison, an average, casually biking conventional bicyclist traveling on flat ground might sustain an average speed of 12-15 mph depending on the level of fitness of the person.

It would take rather intense physical effort to achieve 20 mph and above on a pedal bike and sustain it for longer distances.

An e-bike moving at 20 mph will permit the rider to keep that kind of speed with a lot less work, thus being the best and recommended velocity in urban environments for cruises and short and medium-distance commutes.

And if you’re wondering how fast do electric bikes go without pedaling?

This entirely depends on the bike itself, but most e-bikes won’t go more than 20 mph on throttle mode alone.

As for what is the average speed of an electric bike, it normally ranges from 15 to 28 mph, depending on the wide range of models and configurations.

For speed enthusiasts, many manufacturers offer fast electric bikes that reach speeds of 50 mph or higher.

In the end, it all comes down to what you’re expecting from an e-bike. Regular commuters will most likely find speeds of 20 mph quite satisfying for their needs.

Delivery riders, on the other hand, might need a bit more – They’ll find that bikes that reach speeds of up to 25 mph, such as Storm 2, are much more satisfying.

Racers and adrenaline lovers should look for bikes that reach higher speeds.
