Why should you get an electric bike for a delivery job

Electric bikes are becoming more and more popular for delivery riders all across the U.S.

Numbers are showing that e-bike sales have increased four times between 2019 and 2022.[1]

It is estimated that there are more than 65,000 e-bikes on the streets in New York City, primarily used by delivery workers.[2]

There is a reason so many workers are opting for an electric bike for a delivery job. E-bikes are convenient, easy to use, and help navigate the busy streets of NYC without dealing with traffic jams.

Electric bike for delivery job

More and more delivery riders are switching from cars and traditional bikes to e-scooters and e-bikes, especially in urban areas such as NYC.

As of 2022, 1,525 lane miles of bike lanes are installed in NYC. Out of those, 644 are protected bike lanes.[3]

This makes commuting through the city with a bike or an e-bike much easier than by car or another type of large vehicle.

While traditional bikes are still popular, they are physically demanding.

This is great for people who ride a bike as a hobby, but if your work requires you to bike, pedaling without any assistance might be unappealing.

This is one of many reasons why e-bikes for delivery jobs are so handy, even for first-time riders who don’t yet have any experience in the industry.

How to get your first delivery job

Getting a first delivery job might seem like a daunting task. This is because most people have delivery drivers in mind when thinking about getting a job in the delivery business.

And it’s true – becoming a delivery driver can be tricky. You need a license, a clean driving record, and some driving experience.

However, if you wish to use an electric bike for delivery job, everything is much easier. You don’t even need to own an e-bike – you can simply rent it from companies such as Whizz.

Not only that, but riding an electric bike in NYC doesn’t even require a permit! [4]

All you need to do is to apply for a job, rent or buy an e-bike, and you’re ready for your new career.

Benefits of using electric bikes for delivery job

There are several benefits of using electric bikes for delivery jobs. These include:

  • Speed and accessibility. E-bikes are more efficient than cars or vans in urban areas, as they can use bike lines and shortcuts inaccessible to larger vehicles.
  • Parking efficiency. As electric bikes require less space for parking, you don’t need to spend time looking for a parking spot. Not only that, but when you’re not using it, you can simply leave your e-bike indoors.
  • Versatility. E-bikes can be used for a variety of delivery types, from food and parcels to groceries and documents.
  • Eco-friendliness. E-bikes produce zero emissions, and they have a minor carbon footprint.
  • Health benefits. While e-bikes don’t require as much physical work as traditional bikes, you still need to pedal. However, as the strain of pedaling is reduced, it’s much easier to cover longer distances or hilly terrain.
  • Cost savings. Electric bikes are cheaper to purchase and maintain compared to traditional delivery vehicles. They require less expensive fuel (electricity) and have fewer mechanical components that can break down.

Features of perfect delivery bike

Of course, not every e-bike is suitable for delivery work. A good electric bike for the delivery job should have the following features:

  • A high-quality battery that can provide you with a range of at least 60 miles per charge.
  • A powerful motor that can help delivery riders go uphill and carry heavy loads without difficulty.
  • Decent cargo capacity is important, so the bike should have sturdy rear racks suitable for deliveries.
  • Durable frame and components that can withstand daily use and weather conditions.
  • Comfortable design, which includes a comfortable saddle, adjustable handlebars, and suspension systems.
  • Good speed, but not too high, so you won’t accidentally go over the speed limit, which is 25 mph in NYC.[4]

Many bikes on the market are not designed with delivery riders in mind. This is why finding a suitable e-bike can be a challenge.

Whizz designs e-bikes precisely for delivery riders. Its newest model, Storm-2, is one of the best electric bikes for delivery jobs out there.

It has a lithium-ion battery with a range of up to 85 miles, which is more than most other similarly-priced models on the market.

Also, it can reach the speed of up to 25 mph (with pedal assist), perfect for regulations in NYC.

With its large payload capacity of 300 lbs, this e-bike can allow you to deliver food orders as efficiently as possible – and increase your profit as a result.

Cost and investment of an electric bike

If you want to start your first delivery job, renting is your best option.

You can also apply for the All-in Plan, which includes a Storm-2 bike, an additional battery that can further increase your range, a Protection plan, as well as numerous accessories and safety equipment, such as a helmet and a backpack.

In other words, this plan would cost you a little under 9$ a day, which is far less than you would earn as a delivery rider in just one hour!

Real-life examples

Whizz has hundreds of satisfied customers who have increased their food delivery business profit by riding Whizz’s e-bikes.

One delivery rider tested Whizz’s Storm e-bike, and these were his thoughts:

  • The bike is sturdy and easily handled the weight of 300 lbs, although it did felt a bit unstable at a few moments.
  • The bike reached 24.6 mph with the throttle alone. With pedal assist, the rider was able to reach 26 mph, which is even more than originally stated!
  • With a pedal assist level 3, the rider was able to get 35 miles per single-battery charge, although he states that his weight and overall conditions might’ve lowered the range a bit.

Overall, most delivery riders agree that Storm and Storm-2 are some of the best electric bikes for delivery jobs you can get.
