Are electric bikes high maintenance?

Feb 01, 24

Author: Anelisa Nokoyo

Maintaining an electric bike is a rather important task for every rider.

Electric bikes require more maintenance than traditional bikes. This is due to their complexity and weight and also because riders use them for faster and longer rides.

  • However, this can vary for reasons such as:
  • The quality of the components
  • Riding conditions
  • How much do you ride your bike
  • How well do you care for your bike

Maintaining an electric bike is essential for any delivery rider. It ensures the bike performs well, has a proper lifespan, and that you can ride it safely.

Not only that, but regular maintenance helps avoid costly repairs and ensures you can ride without any headaches.

While relatively easy to maintain, e-bikes have some particularities that set their maintenance apart from the ones required for traditional bikes. This is because they have standard bike parts as well as a battery, motor, and electric system.

Battery maintenance

The battery is one of the most critical components of an e-bike. Taking proper care of it is crucial to maintain its health and extend its lifespan.

Most e-bikes use lithium-ion batteries, which require specific handling. This includes regular charging.

Don’t wait until your e-bike battery is depleted – lithium-ion batteries work best when kept between 20% and 80%. If you allow your battery levels to drop to 0%, you are shortening its lifespan.

Similarly, overcharging a battery can cause harm. While most modern bikes have built-in protection to prevent overcharging, it’s still a good idea to avoid leaving the battery on the charger for too long. Stop charging it once it reaches 100%.

Of course, choosing a proper charger is a must. Always use the one the manufacturer provided you with. If you lose it, contact them and find out the best replacement option.

When you’re not using the battery, make sure you keep it in a cool, dry place. Steer it away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures, and keep it at about 50% charge.

Motor and electrical system maintenance

The motor and electrical components are vital to the e-bike. With some proper care, you can keep these parts running smoothly.

Regularly inspect the cables, connectors, and motor to ensure their security. Over time, vibrations from riding can loosen the connections.

Also, while the motor is typically sealed to protect it from the elements, you still need to keep it clean.

Don’t use high-pressure water directly on the motor. This could force water into the seals. Instead, use a damp cloth to clean around the motor area and dry it thoroughly.

General bike maintenance

Lastly, e-bikes require basic upkeep of their mechanical components. This includes tires and brakes.

It’s essential to maintain the correct tire pressure. Check the tire pressure regularly, especially before long rides.

Do your research and see what the manufacturer recommended when it comes to pressure levels.

Regularly check the brake pads for wear. Electric bikes reach higher speeds and are quite heavy, so brakes can wear down more easily.

The chain, gears, and derailleurs of an e-bike can also wear down over time, mainly if the bike is frequently used in high-assist modes. The best way to prevent this is to keep the chain lubricated and clean.

Also, check for chain stretch, which can affect shifting and overall performance.

Most top-quality e-bikes, such as Storm-2, are built of high-quality parts that can last very long.

Also, as these bikes were designed with delivery riders in mind, they are made to withstand constant riding on various city terrains, making them quite effortless to care for.
