Author: Anelisa Nokoyo

It’s illegal to ride a bike on the sidewalk in NYC. You’re supposed to ride bikes on bike lanes and on the streets with a speed limit of up to 30 mph.

Cyclists who ride on the sidewalk can face consequences such as:

  • A penalty of up to $100.
  • If riding on the sidewalk endangers property or other people, the cyclist might be guilty of a misdemeanor, which can cost up to $300 and result in 20 days in jail.
  • Subsequent violations within the time frame of 6 months will result in double the consequences.
  • The cyclist might have their bike seized and impounded if there are multiple misdemeanor offenses.[2]

However, there are a few exceptions, and these include:

  • If the sign says that you can ride a bike on the specific sidewalk.
  • If the cyclist is 12 years or younger.
  • If wheels are less than 26 inches in diameter.[3]
