How fast do e-bikes go without pedaling?

Feb 01, 24

Author: Anelisa Nokoyo

In the United States, e-bikes are classified into different classes, each with specific characteristics and maximum speeds:

  • Class 1 E-bikes: These e-bikes have a motor that only provides assistance when the rider is pedaling. The maximum speed for Class 1 e-bikes is typically limited to 20 miles per hour (MPH). In other words, they can reach a top speed of 20 MPH without the rider pedaling.
  • Class 2 E-bikes: Class 2 e-bikes are equipped with a throttle, allowing the rider to accelerate without the need for pedaling. Similar to Class 1, the maximum speed for Class 2 e-bikes is also limited to 20 MPH.

It's important to note that these speed limits are regulated to ensure the safety of e-bike riders and pedestrians. Riders should adhere to these speed limits to comply with local e-bike laws and regulations. Additionally, some e-bikes may have slightly different speed limits depending on local regulations, so it's advisable to check the specific laws in your area.
