How far can you ride an e-bike in a day?

The question ‘How far can you ride an e-bike in a day?’ is a tricky one.

Generally, most e-bikes have a range of between 20 and 100 miles per charge. However, the exact mileage depends on several factors, such as:

  • Power mode: Some electric bikes have various power modes. Typically, you’ll find eco, high power, and normal modes. The lower the power mode, the slower the speed, but the greater the range.
  • Riding conditions: The terrain and weather conditions can affect your mileage. Riding on flat terrain requires less battery power than going uphill. Strong winds and poor weather conditions might also affect your range.
  • Cargo load: Carrying heavy cargo can reduce the e-bike's capacity. This is one reason why delivery riders should always look for an electric bike with a higher range than they think they might need.
  • Battery capacity: Not all e-bikes have the same batteries. Modern batteries, such as Samsung cell ones, typically have a better range than older models.
  • Battery health: Batteries have their own lifespan and health. Once their health is compromised, the range will drop.
  • Riding style: Going high speeds and using different modes can impact your range.
  • Physical capacities: While riding an e-bike causes much less fatigue than riding a standard bike, some pedaling is still required. Not everyone can pedal for the same amount of time, so different people will be capable of riding different distances.

One of the main factors determining an e-bike’s range is battery capacity. E-bikes typically have batteries ranging from 250Wh to 750Wh or higher.

A general rule of thumb is that an e-bike can travel about one mile with motor assistance for every 20Wh of battery power. You should be able to ride a bike with a 500Wh battery for 25 miles on a full charge.

However, this estimate is just a starting point; the true range can vary due to several things.

Another significant influence is the level of pedal assistance the rider uses.

As mentioned, e-bikes generally have different assistance modes. Using lower assistance levels can significantly increase your daily range.

In contrast, if you rely heavily on motor power, you may not travel for as long as you could with harder pedaling.

One more critical factor is the terrain on which the e-bike is ridden. If you ride on flat, smooth roads, you’ll use less energy from the motor than if you were tackling steep hills or rough terrain. As a result, your range will be increased.

For example, a rider on flat city streets, such as the ones in NYC, might easily achieve 50-70 miles in a day, especially in eco mode.

On the other hand, riding on hilly or off-road trails would demand more from the motor and deplete the battery faster. Your range might be lowered down to 20-40 miles.

Weather conditions also affect the e-bike’s range. Riding in windy conditions can drain the battery faster, especially if the wind is against the rider. Cold temperatures affect battery efficiency, reducing the total mileage.

Riding in good conditions is always more efficient, mainly if you plan on traveling long distances.

The rider’s weight and the weight of the cargo also significantly influence the range. A heavier rider or a rider carrying lots of weight will require the motor to work harder. This will drain the battery rather quickly.

On the other hand, a lighter rider with minimal cargo can expect to cover more ground with the same amount of battery power.

Additionally, using throttle-only modes will consume more energy and reduce range compared to pedal-assist modes, where the rider contributes some power through pedaling.

Some e-bike models also allow for spare batteries, which can be swapped during the ride to extend the range significantly. You can purchase an additional power bank on the Whizz’s website.

Consider these factors when choosing the best electric bike and planning a ride. This is especially important for delivery riders, whose income depends on their vehicles. Look for e-bikes that can go at least 70 miles per charge, such as Storm-2.
