E-bike battery charging tips for delivery riders

Did you know that the way you charge your e-bike battery can greatly impact its lifespan? That's why we decided to make a list of e-bike battery charging tips that may help you to expend life or the battery.

While it’s true that the battery’s lifespan is counted in charge cycles, what’s even more important than the amount of charging is whether you’re charging it in a proper way.

10 e-bike battery charging tips to follow

1. Make sure you charge in a proper environment

You can charge your e-bike battery between 800 and 1,600 times. However, if you charge it in an improper environment, that number will be drastically lower.

It’s best to always charge your e-bike battery in a dry environment, away from any weather factors.

Also, you shouldn’t charge the battery if the room is too hot or too cold. The optimal room temperatures for charging are between 41°F and 113°F.

Keep in mind that this doesn’t mean you should keep it stored within this range.

Luckily, there are ways to keep your battery warm during winter. Whizz also offers a Winter Pack that comes with an insulation bag and other equipment necessary for those cold days.

2. Avoid extension cords

Extension cords can be a safety hazard, and they usually don’t provide the amount of power necessary to charge an e-bike battery properly.

Always charge directly on the wall outlets. This will not only help prevent accidents but also make sure your e-bike battery works for as long as possible.

3. Use chargers approved by the manufacturer

Every battery should be charged on a compatible charger. Not all chargers work on all batteries – quite the opposite. Using the improper charger might leave your battery empty or even cause a hazard.

Always use the charger you’ve bought together with your e-bike. If this isn’t possible, contact your manufacturer and ask to buy a new charger.

Some manufacturers might even help you find a proper replacement if, for any reason, they aren’t able to provide you with a spare.

4. Monitor charging

Even if you’re doing everything right, batteries and electric equipment can always fail. While this often happens without your fault, you should still keep an eye on the battery during the charging process.

This means that you shouldn’t keep your e-bike battery charging throughout the night.

Stop charging immediately if you notice any warning signs, such as smoking, swelling, changes in shape or color, or if the battery or the charger emit an unusual odor or noise.

Not only that, but short circuits or power outages can interrupt with the charging process. You might wake up to find your e-bike empty, even though you need it urgently!

Fortunately, there is a way to deal with this hassle, and that is to buy an extra battery. Two batteries are less likely to fail than one.

5. Don’t keep the battery charging for too long

Another charging mistake many delivery riders make is charging their battery for too long.

We’ve already mentioned that you shouldn’t keep your battery on a charger during the night. Another reason why this isn’t a good idea is because it can cause harm to your battery.

If you always charge your battery to 100%, its lifespan might be shortened. Instead, you should keep it charged between 80% and 90% for optimal results and increased life expectancy.

6. Don’t wait until the battery is fully depleted

Similarly, you shouldn’t wait until the battery is fully depleted before attaching it to a charger.

Each time your battery depletes to 0%, it becomes less durable. In fact, this is one of the main reasons why your e-bike battery might be losing functionality.

Instead, try charging it when it is lower than 20%. While this isn’t always possible, such charging habits will quite prolong your battery’s lifespan.

7. Don’t leave your battery plugged in all the time

Even if you decide that you want to keep your battery fully charged, it’s important not to leave your battery plugged in all the time.

Lithium-ion batteries most e-bikes use don’t benefit from constant charging. Quite the opposite, this can damage them and lower their energy output.

Instead, you should stop charging them once they reach 100%.

Don’t forget to unplug your charger once you stop using it. This will lower your energy bills and reduce the chances of fires and malfunctions.

8. Don’t cover the battery or the charger

It’s important to make sure nothing is covering the battery or the charger during the charging process.

Charging produces heat, and any cloth you put on top of your battery might catch fire.

Not only that, but the additional heat from the cloth can overheat the battery or the charger, resulting in malfunction.

It goes without saying that you should keep any combustible materials away from the charger, as they pose additional threats.

9. Keep the charger’s light facing upright

Now, this is one tip that not many people think about, but it can be a battery’s life saver.

Most batteries or their chargers have a light that indicates the power level. This light should either turn green or stop blinking once the battery is charged to 100%.

As you know by now, you should remove your battery from the charger the moment it turns 100% – or even before that. A charger’s light is a nice indicator that the battery is fully charged.

This is why you should always make sure the light is facing upright so that you can see it at first glance.

While nothing bad will happen just because the light is facing downwards, this way, you are less likely to notice that the e-bike is full on time.

10. Charge the bike as soon as you stop using it

If you’ve just finished your delivery riding shift and plan on continuing with your work in a few days, you should charge your battery right away.

However, this can vary on many factors.

For example, maybe your e-bike battery is still fairly full. If this is the case, there is no need to charge it at all between rides.

The frequency of charging also depends on your riding style and the type of battery.

Also, if you know you won’t be riding your e-bike for a while, don’t charge it right away. Instead, make sure the battery is at around 50%, then store it in a dry, warm place.

Key note: Buy an e-bike from a reliable manufacturer

One of the most important things for anyone looking to have an e-bike battery that reaches its full potential is to buy an e-bike from a reliable manufacturer.

A high-quality battery will last you for a very long time with minimal maintenance, making it a good investment.

Storm-2, for example, uses Samsung cell batteries with a capacity of up to 85 miles per charge (on pedal assist)!

These batteries typically last between 2 and 3 years, which is more than most other models.
